Severn Trent’s Finham Sewage Treatment Works, serving over 450,000 people, was upgraded in 2022 with thermal hydrolysis process (THP) technology to enhance sludge treatment and support environmental and population demands.
The THP system pretreats sludge before anaerobic digestion, boosting digester capacity, producing high-quality biosolids, and increasing biogas yields. This biogas is refined and exported to the national gas grid, supplying renewable gas to around 9,000 homes and contributing to net zero targets.
