Water Authority Vechtstromen (WVS) is responsible for the management of surface water and wastewater for approximately 800,000 people in the central-eastern part of the Netherlands. WVS decided to centralise all sludge treatment in one modern facility in Hengelo, allowing the shutdown of ageing or less efficient facilities.
The treatment plant no longer has to purchase electricity but instead supplies a considerable amount of energy to the grid. As a result, Vechtstromen's operating costs decreased by 1.5 million euros per year, and the payback period for the entire project is approximately 8 to 10 years.
