In 2020, a consortium of Cambi and Slovenian engineering company Riko was awarded a contract to build a thermal hydrolysis sludge processing plant in the city of Lviv. The sewage sludge collected from the city is currently landfilled, releasing greenhouse gases and high phosphorus and nitrogen loads that pollute the Baltic Sea.
The project will reduce nutrient pollution as well as greenhouse gas emissions by 128,600 tonnes CO2 annually. This reduction is equivalent to removing about 90,000 fossil fuel cars from the streets of Lviv. The biosolids product will be of exceptional quality and free of pathogens, making it suitable for land application.
