Davyhulme Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) has been in operation since 1894 and serves a population equivalent of 5.6 million in and around the city of Manchester. It is one of the UK's largest wastewater treatment works and is a valuable renewable energy source.
Cambi's thermal hydrolysis system was commissioned in 2013 and introduced a host of benefits for the plant. Up to 8 megawatts of electricity is produced from biogas, making the plant self-sufficient in terms of energy. The thermal hydrolysis unit also increased the capacity for sludge treatment by over three times. This allows United Utilities to import and treat sludge from other treatment plants in north-west England and avoided the construction of a planned new incinerator near Preston. In addition, the plant now processes biosolids that can be applied to land as fertiliser or a sustainable soil improver. It may also be used as feedstock for the Mersey Valley Sludge Processing Center.
