Howdon Sewage Treatment Works (STW) is located on the Eastern coast of England in Newcastle and is operated by Northumbrian Water Group. The STW has a design capacity to treat 40,000 tonnes of dry solids per annum. It takes in indigenous and imported sludge from nearby locations that are stored in cake reception hoppers with odour control. Dewatered sludge is treated in a Cambi unit followed by anaerobic digestion at 40°C with jet mixing. After digestion, the sludge is dewatered and further treated at the STW. The biogas is used in combined heat and power, allowing more than 40% to be converted into renewable energy. The biosolids are dried using dryers onsite.
