Perth - Woodman Point
The Woodman Point wastewater treatment plant in Western Australia underwent a significant upgrade in 2019 to cope with population growth. To manage the increased sludge production due to this upgrade, Water Corporation will modernise its sludge strategy to include the thermal hydrolysis process (THP). The adoption of THP is expected to reduce biosolids transport by 1,000 truck movements annually and cut carbon emissions. This and the overall renovation of the plant will increase processing capacity to 120 tonnes of dried solids per day.
We aim to recover 100% of [the biosolids] within the Perth metro region. […] These upgrades will allow nearly 50% of the facility’s energy requirements to be produced on-site […]. Overall, the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 5,600 tonnes CO₂-e annually.
