Cambi will deliver its thermal hydrolysis technology to the Kubratovo wastewater treatment plant in Sofia, Bulgaria. This marks Cambi’s first project in the country, in partnership with the DZZD "SWWTP - Kubratovo" consortium.
The project will bring Sofia:
- Pathogen-free biosolids for land recycling.
- A 50,000-tonne annual reduction in biosolids volume, cutting handling costs by 40%.
- A 30% biogas boost, generating renewable energy for 10,000 households.
The difference is the amount of biogas produced.
Usually, wastewater treatment plants are producing 50 to 60% of their needs.
Here, we cover more than 100% of our needs. We are also saving
CO₂ emissions, approximately 70,000 tonnes per year.

Funded by EU structural funds, the upgrade ensures compliance with stricter environmental standards and future sludge regulations. Commissioning of the THP was completed in 2024.
