The city of Vilnius has a system of wastewater pumping stations of different capacities, all of which pump municipal wastewater to the Vilnius Wastewater Treatment Plant. In 2008, a project for the modernisation of the sludge treatment plant began. Vilnius Water shifted from treating sludge with lime stabilisation to advanced anaerobic digestion preceded by Cambi's thermal hydrolysis process. 

The key benefits of thermal hydrolysis at Vilnius include smaller digester volume requirements, increased biogas production used for cogeneration, and resulting biosolids that are sterilised and pathogen-free. The utility uses the final product as a soil conditioner for forestry.
