DC Water's Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant is Cambi's first thermal hydrolysis plant in the US and the largest Cambi system in the world. By upgrading the plant with Cambi's system, cake production was reduced by approximately 40%, yielding high-quality Class A biosolids. DC Water is now selling the biosolids under the brand name "Bloom."
Going for advanced anaerobic digestion using thermal hydrolysis has resulted in cost savings of more than USD 200 million for the plant due to a significant reduction in expensive new-build digestion capacity, smaller cake volumes, and increased biogas production.
Cambi provides three major benefits. Firstly, it eliminates risk; secondly it saves significant amounts of money; and finally, it provides very dramatic environmental benefits. Any one of those by itself would be a sufficient driver for the project (George S. Hawkins, former General Manager of DC Water)
