Abstract

Dewatered sludge from SBR (15% TS) and CAS system (17% TS) was tested using three anaerobic digestion (AD) conditions, i.e., Mesophilic (35°C); Thermophilic (55°C); Thermal hydrolysis (CambiTHP) followed by AD. Key findings were, THP+AD on SBR sludge yielded twice the methane yields than thermophilic and 4 times more than mesophilic. HRT of THP fed digesters can be reduced to 8 days without much reduction in methane. THP+AD assays conducted at various temperatures with metagenomic analysis showed the highest microbial diversity. THP+AD increased degradability of organic micropollutants. The THP pretreated sludge could be a good source of carbon enrichment in carbon deficient soils.
