Introduction & Significance
Advanced Anaerobic Digestion (AAD) based on Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP) (Barber, 2020) provides the benefits of cake volume reduction due to both high Volatile Solids (VS) reduction and cake dryness improvement. This resultsin lower energy requirement to evaporate water when AAD is combined with thermal drying (TD) stage, and less TD capacity to be installed. Several water utilities and plant owners have decided to follow this route, for instance
Eydap (plant owner) and Aktor (operation company) at Psyttalia Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Athens (Greece), and Wellington City Council (plant owner) at the Moa Point WWTP at Wellington (NZ).
