Abstract

Wastewater treatment is at its core a circular economy endeavour, cleaning used water before returning it to its natural cycle. The trend in the wastewater sector now is to also bring the sludge line to a circular economy model, by turning the waste into valuable resources – biogas and organic fertiliser. The key to achieve this is effective anaerobic digestion, with either pre-treatment or post-treatment of the sewage sludge. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the economic benefits of the application of a Cambi Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP) in a WWTP as a pre-treatment of Anaerobic Digestion. The application of Cambi THP is a promising technique, with more than 60 installations worldwide. By applying this treatment, more gas is produced, the available digestion capacity is utilized better and the dewatering proceeds better, resulting in a volume and cost reduction.
