Abstract

The Thermal Hydrolysis Process, after more than 60 plants and 20 years of successful operation worldwide, has been recognised as the leading pre-treatment system for advance anaerobic digestion, allowing to dramatically reduce digestion volume (up to 1/3), increase the biogas yield (up to 50%), decrease the final cake amount to produce a pathogen free cake Class A suitable for agricultural reuse.
In the Amperverband Wastewater Treatment Plant (Germany), the Cambi Thermal Hydrolysis Process has been applied in a new conceptual configuration, Cambi SolidStream®, which has been demonstrated as a net energy producing semi-drying process.
This study will illustrate the configuration behind this process and analyse the performance achieved with special attention to the final semi-dried product.
By using the Cambi SolidStream® technology it is possible to reach high dry solids concentration in the final cake only by using centrifuge (40 – 60% DS), placed directly after Thermal Treatment Unit. The final biosolids product is well stabilised, pathogen free, low-odour. In addition, the overall volatile solids reduction has been increased to more than 70% and volume of dewatered biosolids cake to less than 60%.
