Enhancing the Capacity and Long-Term Sustainability of Sewage Sludge Incineration by Using Thermal Hydrolysis and Digestion Upstream

Barber, W.P.F.

Influents, 2020

Introduction

Incineration can play an important
role with respect to sludge
management. For instance, if
regulations prevent biosolids land
application of biosolids, sludge
contains hazardous materials, or
local topography is inconsistent
with biosolids application, then
incineration may provide a viable
outlet. Additionally, sludge incineration
is a proven technology, reduces
reliance on landfills, provides a final
disposal method, and may be suitable
for extracting energy. However,
incineration is expensive, generates
hazardous waste, has onerous
monitoring requirements, suffers from
unfavourable public perception, and is
low on the waste hierarchy. Therefore,
while it may be necessary in certain
instances, it is preferable to minimize
its use.
