Abstract

A full scale thermal hydrolysis process (THP) was installed prior to anaerobic digestion (advanced anaerobic digestion) at Tarnow wastewater treatment plant in Poland. Primary sludge underwent acid hydrolysis and blended with waste activated sludge before being fed to the THP. The biosolids were reduced by 50%, while enhancing biogas production used for combined heat and power. A year later, another TH reactor was installed, which could treat additional sludge from 38 municipalities, over 70 wwtps also carrying out organic waste co-digestion with food and animal waste processing plant. THP modularity helped Tarnow achieve higher throughput, lowered peak steam demand and also allowed room for redundancy.
