Reduction of Sludge Production from WWTPs Using Thermal Pre-treatment and Enhanced Anaerobic Methanisation

Introduction

The Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP) as developed by Cambi AS has become a well-known process for the pre-treatment of waste activated and primary sludge before anaerobic digestion. Approximately 40 projects have been built and approximately 15 are under construction. The main driver behind most of these projects being the better quality and the reduced quantity of the biosolids end-product (low quantity of high DS cake, pathogen free Class A biosolids), together with a reduction in digester construction costs. Recent projects have been developed and are being built that also focus on the energy efficiency of the overall wastewater treatment process. For these projects, an innovative way to use THP has been proposed which processes only the waste activated sludge.
