Introduction

Xiaohongmen Water Reclamation Plant (XHM WRP) was designed and built up in year 2005 for the sewage treatment of 600,000 m3/d from southern part of Beijing city. Conventional anaerobic digestion with 5 egg-shaped digesters were installed to digest mainly primary sludge (PS), while waste activated sludge (WAS) went directly to dewatering and disposal. Since 2010, new strategic study has aimed to high efficiency, good living environment in nearby residence, recycling of resources, and carbon reduction. The five sludge plants (including Xiaohongmen, Gaobeidian, Gaoantun, Qinghe 2 and Huaifang) applied the same sludge treatment process based on THP and high solids anaerobic digestion with final cake (Biosolids) for land application (including sport field greening for Winter Olympic 2022), installed during 2016-2019 and all are in normal operation ever since. XHM project (Figure 1) has exemplified how advanced anaerobic digestion with THP has been adapted in an existing plant with upgrading and expansion. In this paper, the experiences are shared about biogas production and biosolids land application in XHM.
